Sant Llorenç des Cardassar

Pou Vell
This emblematic historical site is notable for its connection with water and literature, offering a unique cultural and heritage attraction for visitors.
The Pou Vell is one of the most emblematic places in Sant Llorenç, both for what it once represented in terms of supplying water to people and livestock, and for being the meeting place of the main characters in Flor de Card, the most extensive novel by Salvador Galmés. Although the well is probably older, the first written references to the arcades where the washing troughs were located date from the mid-17th century. Originally, the construction had a porch that was open to the outside through two arcades, one of them with a very low segmental arch. In 1975, the Sant Llorenç des Cardassar Town Council carried out a refurbishment in which the sinks were removed and the building was converted into a coach house. In 2003, a new refurbishment was carried out to preserve the two slopes with a structure of round wooden trunks and Arabic tiles on top, and to preserve the three iron rings that were used to secure the cattle. In 2005, a plaque with a fragment of the novel Flor de Card was placed on it as a tribute to Salvador Galmés, as part of the action of this story takes place there.
